An Imperfect Solution For Perfect People In A Perfect Position
At $50 I said no way.
At $40, in desperation for a solution (I have health issues which have me immobilized for much of the day and I use my iPad for work), I decided to give it a try.
I wanted to love it, just like the five star reviews on here; but the naysayers were right; this is a great idea, and if it happens to fit your perfect position and use scenario, it’s wonderful; but chances are this will frustrate you more than help you.
PROS
It is made with a high-quality, good looking, pleasant feeling, removable and washable cover. I was hoping for a darker color like black or dark blue, but the gray is very neutral, and very nice. The zipper is well hidden.
No matter how you use it, it seems to be very stable. It does not tip, rock, or slide too much; though some commenters were correct that it would be better if it were heavier.
The width is pretty good, and though I would prefer it a bit narrower, it is great for both portrait and landscape, unlike other designs.
CONS
The price. At $50 it’s ridiculous. At $40, if it solves all my problems, it’s begrudgingly worth it. As it stands, it’s far from perfect, and even if it were $20 or even $10, I would likely be gifting or returning it.
Most importantly, it lacks fine adjustment. If you can sit still in the perfect position *for the Flipy*, not for *you*, and choose the one of three sides that works for that position, great; but the second you recline a bit, lean forward a bit, or otherwise change your position to make yourself comfortable, the viewing angle and distance changes, and you’re no longer in an optimal reading, typing, or watching position. Maddening.
I immediately found myself using another pillow or folded towel or shirt or whatever I could find near to hand to shim the Flipy back to a usable angle; but I probably flipped between all three sides several times each time I changed my body position. All the fussing ruined my concentration on what I was trying to read and write about.
Even a slight change in position would frequently change the angle enough to pick up light reflections that were otherwise not present when the screen top and bottom were equidistant to my eyes.
I’m also convinced if you have any kind of belly, unless your vision is perfect, you will not enjoy having your reading distance at or below your waist in order to reduce the pitch angle.
If you wear bifocals, good luck finding the correct viewing angle, along with the correct position and distance. If you wear progressive lenses, have fun nodding your head up and down in portrait view, as the shelf-base height is simply too high.
The base of the shelf is approximately 2 1/2 inches from the surface on which it rests. For me, this is entirely too high. My iPad already has a sizable bezel (border); I do not want the top of the screen above my head, or much above my chin, unless I’m nearly supine.
For me, I would like the base shelf to be as close to my body as possible. The 1 inch iPad bezel already raises the viewable screen to a comfortable height.
I also feel like the height of each face is excessive in total, but if the shelf base were shorter, the overall height would be lower and it probably wouldn’t bother me so much.
This may sound nitpicky, but I have to believe a common use for many people, is to use their iPad while also watching TV; again, the additional 2 1/2 inch height of the shelf makes it difficult to see over the top of your iPad in portrait to see the TV, unless your TV is very high on the wall.
As stated above, it certainly wouldn’t hurt for this to be heavier. It would make it less likely to lose its position, if you happen to find a good one.
Another nitpick: I very much dislike the brightly colored embroidered logo on the side. I understand the need for branding, but this takes away from the classy look. Maybe if it were monochrome instead of multi color.
I generally don’t like to return products, especially ones made of cloth; however, unless I can find someone for whom this will work well, the expensive price tag makes it too tough a pill to swallow.
CONCLUSION
I’m going back to the unintended use of a collapsible, adjustable desktop stand ($8 on Lightning Deal) made for an iPhone/cell phone, but that when folded almost all the way back on itself, makes a nearly perfect holder at a perfect height (zero) and weight.

Most importantly, it rapidly adjusts for minor or major pitch each time you reposition your body.
I just need to attach some sort of stabilizer to prevent it rocking or tipping left to right and sliding in between my legs. It’s otherwise really useful and doesn’t consume any storage space, and is utterly portable.
