WARNING: No longer safe if you have celiac disease or a wheat allergy!
This product is one that I had high hopes for when I purchased it in bulk. I had lucked into a bag at TJ Maxx, and had fallen in love with it. However, sometime between then and now, during a brief period of time when the product was unavailable, it was reformulated. It is no longer as good, and is no longer gluten-free enough to be safe for actual celiacs. I noticed this almost immediately. When I opened the package, the peach scent wasn't nearly as enticing as it had been with the first package I purchased. The snacks themselves weren't as soft, either. I wondered if maybe I had somehow had the misfortune to get a stale batch, but the "Best by" date on the back of the package said February 2017. That, however, was when I noticed that a sticker with a new ingredients list had been put over the original ingredients list! The sticker lists "glucose syrup" as the second ingredient, with an asterisk, and this is what appears after the asterisk: "Contains wheat that has been processed to allow this food to meet the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements for gluten-free foods." Unfortunately, I noticed this after I had already eaten enough to get sick. Within half an hour, I had the characteristic spike of pain in my small intestine that has come to be my warning sign that gluten has sneaked into my body; I ended up having to leave work and cancel my participation in a meeting because I was too ill to attend, and am still not feeling well as I type this today. Let's be honest: the FDA standards are lax as heck, and for an organization that is actively resisting GMOs to actually turn to them for guidance is, not to put too fine a point on it, really shady. Please go back to your old ingredients list, YumEarth. Via this change, you have made a food I was hoping to make a regular part of my diet into something I am forced to actively avoid, and I am going to have to ship back the other YumEarth products I ordered without opening them because I can't afford to spend so much money on bulk food that I can't even eat. I am so disappointed.
