★☆☆☆☆
A great premise, absolutely wasted. Off-putting and uncomfortable.
I couldn't even finish this book it was so off-putting. The premise seemed great, and at first the story was too. Not too long ago I read a YA that had the penpal/letters premise as well and I enjoyed it so much I looked for another. Though that book handled it a million times better than this one on every aspect. Both books covered similar plot points and heavy subjects, and that fact only made it all the more clear how little this book actually cares for creating a well rounded or thought out story. Punk 57 made me honestly uncomfortable to read, namely due to the actions of the male lead being passed off as hot and sexy bad boy material when in actuality it's more towards creepy, bullying, and b̶o̶r̶d̶e̶r̶l̶i̶n̶e̶ abuse. Then there are the moments so obsurd, so stupidly nonsensical that I just had to laugh. Things that would never happen in real life, things teenagers would never believably do or say, things that make me question if the writer ever even went to highschool... And even worse, moments where real character development could have taken place but was just avoided all together. It comes off as poorly thought out and lazy just to get the dumb scene to cary into another dumb scene. For the life of me I can't believe so many people love this book so much, it's pretty highly rated and I was fooled by a first couple okay chapters in the sample...I wish I could like this book, but don't. It's pretty damn unenjoyable in my opinion. Read Letters to the Lost instead.
