A big nothing burger
I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I've read dozens of the EU/Legends books over the last 20 years. This is probably the worst of them. I was very excited for this book. We finally get the opportunity to explore (in a canon sense) post-Jedi stories. This book really didn't deliver. It doesn't focus on any of the main characters from the original trilogy - only few rather inconsequential appearances from supporting characters. It's a small story, focused on a handful of new characters who are interesting in their backgrounds, but not as much in their current acts. Or more so, they seem to behave outside of those characters (bounty hunters who want to share, drunk former imperials). It's all set on one planet with an enemy that doesn't even encounter them. There's really no reason for there to be any conflict between our heroes and the villains. The enemies pose no real threat and their presence in the story is really inconsequential. Interspersed between the main narrative are interludes. Most of them are unnecessary, but some of them are FAR more interesting than the main story. What do I mean? Some creepy individuals procuring Vader's light saber. Han & Chewie going to save the wookies on Kashyyyk. But we're stuck on this random, inconsequential planet with some interesting characters that really don't have to be working together to not-quite-fight against an enemy that poses no real threat to them or the rebellion. For a company that produced Rebels and the second Teaser for the Force Awakens, this book is a real let down. Given the high quality of many of the Star Wars EU books, this book comes up short.
