I had a very positive experience with the Canary device up until this point -- I have owned it for over a year and it has worked reliably. The company has also offered quick and helpful support via Twitter. Unfortunately, that positive experience is now over. I purchased this device specifically because it did not require a paid membership to watch full clips recorded while in away mode (i.e. when all residents are outside of the home). The only caveat was that after 24 hours, the recordings would expire. Today, the company announced that all of their customers would now be limited to 10-second "previews" of these clips, and only paying members would be able to see more than 10 seconds of potential break-ins or burglaries, making the product entirely useless for its primary purpose. Furthermore, since I made the purchase based on the description of the product from the company that is no longer accurate, Canary is guilty of false advertising (in addition to shockingly poor regard for their own customers). Their public explanation for this change is essentially that they needed to increase revenues; it seems they chose to price the device too cheaply to meet their revenue goals, requiring all new and existing customers to continually pay for a membership plan to maintain the advertised features of the product. Shame on Canary for this choice. I will no longer be purchasing any present or future products from this company, and I encourage you to make the same decision.
