DJI has a typical Chinese Based - don't care about you attitude. Won't accept returns of defective products.
I purchased the DJI Phantom 4 the day it was available on the DJI website. It arrived a couple of days later (on a Friday) and I was excited to get it airborne. After charging, I spent several hours getting the firmware to update both the drone and the controller (a somewhat confusing process). Once complete, I attempted to connect a brand new iPad so I could get airborne. It would not connect to the controller or drone. I figured it was a bad cable so, I tried a new cable. No luck. OK - so the iPad doesn't connect. Let's try an Android Tablet. Nope. New USB cable. Nope. OK - let's try my iPhone 6+. Yes - it worked. Until I got about 100' off the ground. Disconnect. Try to reconnect. Nope. Try iPad - Yes, now the iPad works. Until I get in the air about 500' away. Disconnect. Nonetheless, I go through this routine for a few hours until I just give up and research it online. As I researched the issue, I couldn't find anything on the DJI Phantom 4 - as it was brand new. But boy did I find out all about the Phantom 3 not connecting. This seems to be a more than common occurrence. In fact, it's frequent - and there is no solution. Imagine if you plunked down $1400 (Plus another $250 in batteries and accessories) on a flying camera and couldn't actually see the video or pictures you were taking. Being that a drone that can't connect to a device to view telemetry and images in real time is pointless, I decided I would just return it to DJI for a refund. Seems to me, if you're going to spend $1400 on something like this, it should just work. So, I emailed and called DJI. Guess what - can't return it. Even though I contacted them the next business day after receiving it - they told me that, since it was activated, it couldn't be returned. It does, however, clearly state, in their terms and conditions, that they will accept a return for a full refund within 7 days of taking receipt of the order - assuming the device is defective - which clearly it is. They have indicated that, since I have activated the device, they will no longer accept a return of the drone. I asked how I could know the device was defective without activating it - to which i have received no response. DJI doesn't seem to care, at all, about this very well known issue with many of their devices. Not being able to connect a visualization device to the drone makes it worthless for taking pictures or video. In fact, I could have bought a $20 mini drone that would accomplish the same thing as this. In addition, they refuse to honor their own terms and conditions and have responded to me with the typical Chinese based service response - which is to ignore me - or pretend like I don't exist. I would caution anyone thinking about buying anything from this company in doing so. They are not consumer friendly and have not shown any desire to stand behind their products. Their support has been horrible and they are indifferent to customer complaints like most Chinese companies. I would recommend looking towards a US based company for something that is high end like this.
