Greatly exaggerated performance
In Ecosmart's product description they claim the following for their model ECO 27 "This Smart Technology electric tankless water heaters is configured for climates where incoming water temperature can reach as low as 37 Degree. The ECO 27 is capable of heating nearly 3-Gallon per minute at this temperature." Note they do not specify to what temperature the water is heated. If you made the mistake of buying this unit, as I did, in the owner's manual Ecosmart specifies the performance parameters for this unit. For an incoming water temperature of 55F an output temperature of 105F can be obtained at a 3.7 gallon per minute flow rate (based on 240V input). When I took my first shower the water temperature was not close to 105F at the flow rate I was using. To determine the ECO 27 performance I measured the incoming water temperature (58F) and input power (238V) and throttled my flow rate until I measured an outlet temperature of 105F. The flow rate under these conditions was 2.4 gallons per minute. This is 35% less water that can be heated to 105F than Ecosmart claims. I could find nothing in the Troubleshooting Guide to explain the disparity. When I called Ecosmart at 1-877-474-6473 around 1:30 EST to speak to their Tech Support I was unable to verify they exist. For more than 15 minutes a recording informed me that my wait time to speak to someone in Tech Support was 1 minute. In the future, if the unit malfunctions, rather than exercise their supposed warranty by contacting Tech Support, I will discard it. In summary, the ECO 27 is not suitable to supply a suitably warm shower in the northern half of the US during the winter. With respect to cost savings for units installed in the south, the time it would take to recoup the cost of the Eco 27, plus installation, over a tank type heater would take too long to be practical. When coupled with the questionable availability of their Tech Support I would not recommend purchasing an Ecosmart tankless heater.
