DO NOT BUY!!!!!
I am just going to post my letter to Hirt's as my review: Greetings: In the beginning of February I purchased a Chicago Hardy fig tree from you through Amazon. Before I go on, you should know that I live in Montana. I planned on keeping the fig in a pot. In February it was about 10 degrees with 3 feet of snow. Furthermore I was born and raised in Montana and I have never seen a fig tree here, either outside or indoors. I am also a forest pathologist/entomologist for the USDA Forest Service. So back to my story. I received the plant in February. I took it out of the box and planted it in new soil in a new pot. It had two little leaves on it which I noticed looked funny but I assumed that it was because they were remnants from last year. When two new leaves emerged I noticed something was definitely off and started my research. It didn't take me long to find out my fig had leaf mosaic. I took a leaf into the lab and looked for mites, there were no mites, which means it contracted the virus from the mother plant or the mites had died off. I took pictures of the leaves and contacted Hirt's customer support. The gal told me that my plant has mites and I should discard it. I explained the situation to her (living in Montana, dead of winter, original leaves were infected etc.) and she did give my money back, but she also rather curtly informed me that the fig left Hirt's without the virus. I can assure you that it not true. It is not possible that the tree got this virus in February in Montana. In addition the original leaves were infected. As I said I did receive my money back, but the truth is you are shipping out figs across the country with an incurable virus that can greatly reduce the production and growth of the plant. I do not appreciate being lied to and I do not appreciate that you are sending these out across the country. I know many people will never know that something is very wrong with their plant. You business is one of those businesses where reputation is everything. Because of this incident I don't feel I could ever trust Hirt's again. I have contacted the Ohio Dept. of Agriculture to let them know, and I will never purchase from you again.
