This book is appalling. I like my kids to read book with dynamic characters who do good things and bad - who are complex and give us the opportunity to discuss the fact that we all make mistakes. Our job is to do our best and learn from them. Bean is not a dynamic character; she is simply mean. 1. Bean HATES her sister. I get that there is always tension between siblings, but the overall message for kids should be that we love and respect each other. Bean absolutely does not. She tricks, steals, calls her names, and even tries to cast a spell on her. 2. Bean is creepy - like look at other people under the dressing room door, mouth threats to people, and talks about ghosts putting their icy cold fingers around another girl's neck. 3. Bean is mean. She immediately judges her neighbor very harshly mocking her clothes, making fun of her for playing by herself and calling her names. There is no sympathy, no attempt to understand or even get to know the other girl - and they're supposed to be best friends. This is horrible character to show to kids. Please don't let your kids ready these books. Or at the very least read them with them because the book teaches some very screwed up lessons. And the illustrations are super creepy.
