★★☆☆☆
Decent as a cooling fan, useless as an air filter
I bought this product to help improve the air quality in my home. I was happy it had an automatic sensor mode and have generally been happy with my other Dyson products. Setup was easy, as was connecting it to wifi in order to control the unit and pull data. As a cooling fan, this product works fairly well and is easy to move around, turn on or off with the remote, etc. Unfortunately, that is the extent of its use. I have 3 air quality monitors (including the one built into this). I bought this Dyson Fan/Filter combination to reduce the particulate matter in the air and it has zero effect at all, even according to its own (poor quality) internal sensor. I used a Speck (open source air quality monitor) to set a baseline for my room prior to installing the Dyson. Then I set the dyson on automatic mode at maximum possible settings (it has some gradient scale with words rather than allowing you to specify at what level you want). Unfortunately, the air quality in the room was never improved. I also ran some air quality tests to see if it reduced time to recovery from cooking (at all). The dyson and air quality sensors were 12' from the stove. One sensor was adjacent to the dyson, and 1 was at about head level (directly above the dyson). While even the onboard Dyson sensor does detect major air quality problems (such as from cooking within 10') it does nothing to reduce the air quality problems. I left the stove on (releasing some gas and some other particles) for 10m, monitored and manufactured a significant decrease in air quality (from about 25 ug/m^3 to about 60). I repeated this test multiple times. First, with no fans at all, this clears in about 30m (measured twice). Second, with the dyson on auto this clears in about 30m. Third, with the dyson on at full power this clears in about 25m (measured twice), which is probably more due to air flow being affected than with filtering. With a hood on half power, this clears in about 10m (measured twice). With a hood on at full power, this clears in about 5m (measured twice). With a hood on in advance the count never increases (only bothered testing once).
