but I just don't feel very comfortable recommending a device where the jumpers on a 120v ...
As others - I received an offer for a free product in exchange for a review. The people at this company are friendly and responsive so I very much wanted to write a positive review. However I'm unable to do so. The largest concern I have is the manufacturing of the surge protection board within the device. I have attached two pictures. Specifically there are 2-3 non-insulated jumpers on the board. One of them comes probably about 1mm from a lead on one of the MOV's. It's possible the lead of that MOV that is closest to the jumper is in fact electrically identical. However I am still concerned about the overall precision of how those jumpers are placed. In addition there is one strand of both the hot and neutral leads that connect to that board, that did not make it into their respective holes to be soldered. They are just hanging there. Granted it's possible, and even likely - that these devices are tested (voltage applied) at the factory to make sure there are no short circuits... And I acknowledge you can't expect Tripp-Lite quality for $17, but I just don't feel very comfortable recommending a device where the jumpers on a 120v circuit are installed with such a lack of precision. The concept of the two mobile "holders" - I like a lot. In my personal opinion there are some design evolutions they may wish to consider on a future revision: - Most people would want the phone upright so they can quickly press the home button and check charge status or time. However the phones would be on their side. If it mechanically "worked", they could have maybe cut slots in the "trays" about half way through from one side, along the width of the bottom of the tray - a slot say about 3/16" wide. That might allow you to stand the phone(s) up vertically. Not sure if it would work mechanically, but I think they could make it happen. - The lower shelf is awkward to use with the USB ports right above them. (the cabels get in the way of easily placing the phone) Instead I thinkt he USB ports should either be on the very bottom of the unit, or alternatively one on each side, at the bottom, beneath the NEMA 5-15R receptacles. This could work especially nice if the trays could be modified to allow the phone(s) to sit upright (one on each "shelf") - The LED seems to just be to show the unit has power, not that the surge protection is still valid. (MOV based surge suppresors do degrade as they experience surge events, and therefore are not necessarily active.) - This LED is, um, rather bright to say the least - probably about twice as bright as it needs to be. - BESTTEN may wish to consider selling 8" charging cables separately. Short cables are available, but a lot less available than much longer cables, which become overkill if the charging port is literally inches away. In summary: Mechanical construction: 9 or 10; the plastic parts fit together nicely Electrical construction: 2 Overall desig concept: 8 Design implementation: 6 As I said earlier, you can't expect the best surge suppressor out there for $17, but I'd feel a lot more comfortable recommending this if the surge suppressor board was more precisely manufactured. I have provided pictures so that others can judge whether I'm being unfairly tough here. I think they have a winning concept - but may wish to sell a higher quality version at a higher price point. Heck - add some filtering in there to promote / market the "clean power" your mobile devices will be getting. Final comment - there's an Intertek ETS mark on the package. I tried but can find no documentation online proving it is certified. I was hoping their website had this information (Bestten OR Intertek)... But was unsuccessful in finding anything. While I have seen testing reports before, I'm unsure if it's an industry practice to readily publish them online. My apologies for the length; I tend to be rather thorough.
