Usability issues making it a painful experience
We purchased two of these for our twin four-year-old boys. We have an original Kindle Fire that my daughter, now nine, has used for years and we've been quite happy with it. The biggest problem with this tablet is that it comes with links to so much content that is not yet downloaded. So a four-year-old of course taps one thing, and the picture turns gray indicating it is downloading, and then they click another, and another, and another. We live in a rural area so we only have a 2 Mbs connection, and this was just frustrating from a kid and parent perspective. I've been in IT for 20+ years so I'm not a novice or an idiot when it comes to navigating around a user interface. The way to share a movie that you own on Amazon to a child's profile requires you to go to the area where you manage the child's profile. I.e., the ability to share content is not built-in to the area where you download or find the content--it is not a seamless integration. If you have separate profiles for two or three kids, you'll have to go through several steps to share a new movie to each kid's profile. So for me--two kids, one profile. Secondly, a primary purpose for us is for the boys to be entertained as we make a 13-hour car trip. They love several of the TV series that they watch on Amazon Prime every day, so I have downloaded several episodes of their favorite shows. However, there is no way to share a downloaded episode on the child's profile. So, I'll have to make note of what seasons/episodes have been downloaded and then navigate to them when the boys want to watch one of them, because the child's profile shows all of the seasons and episodes, with no indication of episodes are downloaded. I really try not to be unnecessarily critical, but it appears that there was very little thought put into how people really want to use these, particularly in travel situations when it is offline, or when you don't have a 30 Mbs connection. Lastly, just as a heads up for anyone buying this, there is hardly any storage room left out of the box, so if you are planning to download movies and shows for offline viewing, get a large memory card for it.
