I purchased this unit in 2012 and was generally okay with it until Mac OS X 10.11.x came out. El Capitan broke the Neat Desktop application and the company has yet to release an official update. Instead it has posted beta versions and instructions for odd workarounds to problems such as the hardware buttons refusing to work. Using the Neat scanner has become so irritating that I have started letting bills and receipts just pile up. To add insult, on March 1, 2016, the Neat Company posted an announcement that it is ending support for Neat Desktop as of March 31, 2016. Meaning it will stop fixing bugs and allowing new downloads. If past behavior is any indication, the next OS update will break Neat Desktop but now the company won't fix it. Instead, Neat demands that its customers subscribe to its new cloud software. That's a minimum of $72 per year. I'm furious. I paid $400 for a scanner/software bundle a few years ago and now the company has the nerve to hold customers hostage with an annual subscription fee. I'm looking into alternatives and I strongly suggest that you look elsewhere, too.
