While the directions on the stool says that it will lock into place, it doesn't. There is no lock. You can pick up this stool or bump into it with your foot and it can easily fold up on its own. I bought this for my 3 year old to use at the bathroom sink, but I am worried that it will fold if it shifts slightly when stepping on it and he could get seriously hurt. I do not recommend it for children. It would probably be okay for an adult to use on carpeted surfaces.
