Typical Drug Store Clippers are Much Better
Just tried the Harperton larger toe nail clipper alongside the typical drug store toe nail clippers I've been using and the drug store clippers are much easier to use and more efficient. The major problem appears to be the inferior geometry of the Harperton nail clipper. Specifically, although the width is the same, the drug store clippers have:
(1) a longer lever arm; ~70 mm versus ~60 mm on the Harperton;
(2) a 21 mm throw distance to the point at which the blades meet versus an ~11 mm throw distance on the Harperton; and
(3) a ~3 mm blade opening versus a ~2 mm blade opening on the Harperton, which makes the drug store clippers significantly easier to put around nails that have some degree of arching that virtually all nails have.
Although the blade points in the Harperton appear to line up correctly, on two clips I heard a sort of low squeak during the clip that just didn't sound right. In my finger nail / toe nail clipping comparison session today, I found the drug store clippers: (a) easier to position on each nail; (b) required much less required effort to clip; and (c) produced cleaner cuts.
Going back and forth between the Harperton and the regular drug store clipper, it was actually a pleasure using the drug store clipper as compared with the Harperton. The Harperton doesn't even come close. Sorry if my review goes against 98% of the non-one star reviews. I'm an engineer and I'm basing my rating on differences in geometry and actual experience. What more can I say?
