★★☆☆☆
I had a bad experience.
Like most of you reading this, I'm a runner, and a good, dependable watch is a really important part of the sport. After doing a bit of research, it looked like this watch would be a great way to enhance my workouts. And the watch started out great, with useful and fun features. But all the features in the world are useless if it doesn't do one fundamental thing right: Be a dependable stopwatch: I went out on a 20 miler 2 weeks after getting the watch, and at about 10 miles in, I look at the watch and it says: "Something went wrong. Press OK to reset M400." ('Something went wrong' being an unintentionally comical understatement.) After pressing the OK button, the watch restarted -- with the entire previous 10 miles wiped If you're in training, you know this kind of thing is important. SUPER frustrating. But it was just one glitch, probably a fluke, right? I sent the watch back for an exchange to Amazon, and got a brand new one. And now I could get on with my life and everything would be fine. Until this morning, when out for a run and the watch crapped out the EXACT SAME WAY. ("Something went wrong.") Heartbreaking. 2 watches, 2 total system failures, 4 weeks of ownership. I can't go through this again. I'm done with the Polar M400. (Back to my old Timex Ironman, which still works the same as the day I got it.) Maybe my experience is atypical, but i'm getting down on record for your benefit, runner-who-is-thinking-of-buying-this. Be careful. PS. Sent an email to Polar customer service and received their response before writing this review. I described the situation the same way that I have above, and their response was essentially a perfunctory apology and a request to send the watch to them for warranty repair/replacement. Not a wholly unreasonable response, but not one that convinced me to continue with their product. At all. It's going back to Amazon for a full refund. **UPDATE #1**: I wrote the above review within hours after the second M400 crashed, and I'm not sure if you can tell, but I was pretty upset. I ended up immediately sending the Polar back and ordering a Garmin Forerunner 10 to replace it. And after a couple of days with the Garmin, as much as I hate to admit it, the M400 spoiled me. In comparison, the Garmin seemed clunky and inconvenient. I just didn't like it. So after going back over the reviews at various websites, and after some deep ruminations, I've decided to give Polar one last try. Hopefully this is a case of "Third time's the charm" and not "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, fool me three times, and I've got to be some kind of world-class idiot." Depending on how things go, I'll revise this review.
