Disappointing
I'm not sure why this book is listed as suspense. This is a predicable mystery dragged down by an author (and perhaps a translator) using way too many commas, sentence fragments, disjointed descriptions, and extraneous streams of consciousness that bog down key moments. I didn't think the POV and tense switches - sometime every few paragraphs - worked well, and the lack of story coherence was annoying. I think that the author probably thought the style and incoherence would add to the suspense, but it just made the story unpleasant to read at times. (I do give the author/translator kudos for using a row of three diamonds to help us notice the quick POV switches.)
The Night of the Moths ended up being more of a drama than a mystery. Someone might quibble about the overuse of commas as being too picky, but when commas separate phrases needlessly and are used where semi-colons ought to be used, it makes you have to re-read sentences and paragraphs at times to check to see if you missed something. And in that same editing vein, while sentence fragments work great for occasional emphasis, when they are used as a main writing technique, the emphasis is lost and the writing become a jumble. The same goes for the overuse of italics.
I normally enjoy mysteries and suspense, but I wish I had picked a different book for my Kindle First choice.
Note: There is quite a bit of crude language, profanity, and some sexual content in this novel. I realize some won't care about that, but just a heads-up for those who want to avoid it. I skimmed over much of it and went on with the story.
Edited: I just read Rob Natiuk's review and have to agree 100%, plus he pointed out the cell phone improbability. Having stored a tablet for less than a year, only to have the battery expand and ruin it, I have to agree with his comment about the cell phone. I don't see how it could work after 10 years and the chance of having the correct connection to charge it is nil given proprietary ports by most brands in the past and changing through the years to the newer ports. He is also correct about the profanity and sexual content.
