Does not work :(
I purchased this yesterday in my local Home Depot.. I already have a Vera hub now set up for my home automation which includes (3) Schlage Z-wave locks, 2 Nest Thermostats and nearly a dozen different GE (Jasco) Z-wave light switches (including 3-ways, 4-ways and dimmers) - All of which work flawlessly, but I was interested in switching to this because it adds additional connectivity with Zigbee appliances. The app seems to be decent... which is actually the main reason for my purchase since my wife uses an iPhone, and I am using a Galaxy S4, it is nearly impossible to find an app that works well on both platforms.
I opened the box, which literally only contains the hub and the power supply.. there is no documentation included whatsoever.. no setup/troubleshooting guide .. not even a warranty card. This is really not a huge deal for me personally, though I did expect to see *something* included but does not have any impact on my experience, this is just FYI.
Setup is supposed to be pretty straight forward.. all you have to do is plug in the power, fire up the app and it will connect. Key words being "supposed to be"..
I tried 3 different devices; all of which had a different setup method - none of which actually worked.
I initially tried to setup my hub using my phone - a stock/factory Samsung Galaxy S4, running the latest update available (v. 4.4.2) I fired up the app, told it that I wanted to add a hub, put in my wifi credentials, aaaaaand..... Nothing. The lights on the hub blinked from a yellowish, to a purplish color.. and after several minutes the app would respond only to say it's having a problem with the hub, or that it was taking longer than usual. Would I like to try again?
I noticed that my wifi would turn itself off during the process.. I would later find out that the hub generates it's own wifi connection to pass the data from the app to the hub, but I never saw my phone ACTUALLY connect to the "HUBWIFI". When I tried to manually select the HUBWIFI, my phone would tell me that it disconnected it because the data was too slow.. So I initially chalked this up to an Android issue, and not necessarily a Wink/app/hub issue.
Next I tried my iPad - Downloaded the app, went through the same process as before to add the hub. This time however it tells me that I have to manually switch to the HUBWIFI connection and then come back into the app to continue - So I followed the instructions, connect to the hubwifi and enter in my wifi credentials.. the lights blink the same as before, but I eventually get the same in-app message that it's taking longer than usual and there might be a problem with the hub.
During all of this, I have tried unplugging the hub several times in order to reset it, and I tried with both my phone and iPad several times to set it up.. At this point I have wasted well over an hour trying to get this configured, so maybe now is a good time to call Tech-support.
After being on hold for 22 minutes, I decided to opt for a "Call back" - I left a brief message with my name and number, but never received said call back.
I decided that while I was waiting for the call-back that never happened, maybe I can try setting it up with a THIRD device.. 3rd time is the charm and all that right?.. .So I got the app on my wife's iPhone 5S.
Setup was more or less the same, the exception being that it's supposed to transfer the wifi credentials data over bluetooth... and I know Apple is notorious about which devices it will allow you to pair with bluetooth, so I already have my doubts as to how well this is going to work.
I followed the in-app instructions, verified the bluetooth was enabled, same flashing lights, same error message. After the initial run through and failure, I decided to try to "pair" the phone to the hub, like you would for a standard BT device, and of course it didn't see it nor did it pair. I reset the hub, and tried to run through the setup a few more times to no avail.
In total I spent well over 2 hours attempting to get this setup and during one attempt, the closest I got was the hub light flashed blue for a few seconds before I got the same error message in the app. I'm not even sure if the blue light was a good thing .. I'm just assuming since it was different that what I was getting.
All-in-all it was definitely a poor experience .. I spent a few hours researching this last night and I was not the only one to have the same issues.. Also worth nothing that according to other reviewers, this hub is not even compatible with ALL Z-wave devices.. even though, it is supposed to be Z-wave compatible. If it truly supports the Z-Wave standard, it should not matter whether it is "Wink compatible" or not. Z-Wave is a standard, and as such this hub *SHOULD* support any Z-Wave device, but apparently it does not -- of course, I wouldn't know seeing as how I couldn't even get that far to test it.
I will be returning this hub the first chance that I get this weekend. I would have simply written it off as DOA and exchanged it, however if it's not going to support the $1000+ dollars worth of Z-wave devices that I already have, it's not really of any use to me anyway.
