The product arrived quickly and all contents were securely packaged. Installation was fairly simple following the instructions. I first tested the product using a cardboard box with the template holes cut out, and while wearing UV eye protection, before installing it in the plenum above our furnace and both bulbs lit up. However, about an hour after installing the product I thought I smelled something burning so I felt the back of the unit and noticed it was extremely warm, almost hot to the touch. Then I heard a crackling sound coming from the unit, like electrical arcing, so I unplugged it. I re-tested the unit using my cardboard box and sure enough both bulbs were out even though the filaments looked intact. Even worse, the service light on the unit was still lit even though the ballast had obviously burned out. Not a very well designed product in my experience so far. I'm debating whether to get a replacement or a refund. We've got mold in the plenum above our furnace from the AC evaporator coil so this product seemed like a good solution. I may try a replacement first now that I have holes cut in my air duct, but I'm really uncomfortable with the idea of leaving this product plugged in 24/7 if the ballast keeps shorting out. I will definitely be testing any replacement unit routinely since it's clear that the service light can't be trusted to warn about a shorted ballast. I can only hope that there's no fire risk if the ballast shorts out again.
