This is literally the worst experience I've ever had with a USB hub. TLDR: It loses power when multiple devices are connected. CalDigit knows this is an issue and failed to mention it, or resolve it. I first discovered this issue when trying to backup my hard drives. I'm a video editor, and having multiple copies of my data helps keep everything safe. I work off of a Samsung T5 SSD, and the offload projects to other HDD hard drives (I use Lacie, G-tech, and WD). When I saw all the USB ports and a 10Gbps Type-C port on this dock, I thought it would be the perfect device to help with my backups. But when I tried connecting them, some hard drives, especially the T5, kept being disconnected randomly. This is very dangerous for drives while moving data. This would happen when I connected any two powered devices, even thumb drives and SD cards, which have minimal power draw. So I contacted CalDigit. They said "We have seen that the T5 takes the maximum amount of power produced by the Pro Dock by default and will cause other drives to disconnect (or disconnect itself) when it attempts to use more power. I’d encourage you to isolate the T5 to the front USB-A port so that we can determine if all drives will work in this configuration." Not only was this a KNOWN issue, but they failed to both mention this on their product page, and refused to provide support. They instead suggested troubleshooting the drives and my MacBook, making sure they work, and avoid using the T5 on the Type-C port and stick to the Type-A ports instead. I tested all my devices, they all work fine. I tested my MacBook ports, reset NVRAM and SMC, and it works fine. I used their suggested connections, and it turned out fine. So I thought it was all fine. But then the Type-A ports started dropping off too. In the picture, I connected the T5 and Lacie drives using the back Type-A 3.0 ports, and they either get dropped off or don't get connected at all. Even my Logitech receiver I use to connect my mouse and keyboard doesn't work anymore. It hasn't even been 3 months since I got the dock! So, if you plan on using any of the USB ports to any extent that requires connecting more than one at a time (defeating the purpose of having a Thunderbolt 3 dock in the first place), avoid this at all costs. Avoid damaging your external devices. I've reached out to CalDigit again, and still nothing. I'll also further escalate this to Amazon support and see what happens. If something dramatically changes, I'll update this review. EDIT 4/18/20 Another month, and still nothing from CalDigit. I can still use the dock with a display and one thing connected at a time. But whenever I try to plug in hard drives, they still keep dropping off. I decided to reach out to Amazon again, and they were gracious enough to let me return the dock (thanks, Amazon support!). I also sent another email to CalDigit, and they just replied saying I should use their AMA service to replace the dock with another of the same kind. After my experience with this one, I think I'll avoid jumping through the AMA hoops (which would likely take another month), and just return it through Amazon. What a major debacle.
