★★☆☆☆
(Used to) love it, but I have some concerns...
Okay, first off I love this stuff...it tastes amazing. With that said, there are some things that bother me about this product: 1. The price. What is UP with the price!? It just keeps running away!!! Get it under control, Barleans...seriously. 2. As impressive as the ingredients list appears, look at the nutritional facts! WHERE ARE ALL THE VITAMINS AND MINERALS??? According to the label, this stuff is barely even nutritious! Certainly not nutritious enough to justify a dollar per serving! Green Magma has way more vitamins and minerals according to its label, and that product is half the price. So what gives? 3. I called Barlean's to find out whether all of the ingredients in Barlean's Greens is grown in the U.S. (I specifically wanted to make sure they do NOT use ingredients grown in China). I was told that because of the number of ingredients in the product that they indeed do use some that are grown overseas, but the woman I spoke with could not (or would not) confirm or deny that China is one of those countries. I find this VERY worrisome, as food from China is often grown in human waste (night soil) and can still be labelled as organic! Plus, lets face it, there's no oversight in China. Just because they say it's organic doesn't mean a thing to me. I don't want that in my body if I can help it. Barlean's needs to be more transparent with their sources! Lastly, how is it possible that Barlean's is so low in iron when compared to other green drink mixes like Green Magma, etc? Don't get me wrong--I consider that a good thing because I actually try and avoid excess iron in my diet (that's one major reason I go for Barlean's instead of one of the cheaper alternatives), but I have to question the accuracy of their nutritional info when it comes to its iron content. Most of these green powders contain many of the exact same main ingredients, so how is it that Barlean's is so much lower in iron than the others??? I want to believe it, but I have to question it also. ***UPDATE 7/1/2012*** I just ordered another tub of this stuff and SURPRISE!!! The shrink-ray has hit Barleans Greens!! Whereas the large container used to contain 18.6oz of powder, they've now reduced it down to 16.9oz! That's 9% less product. Has the price been reduced 9% accordingly? NO! I see they've changed the ingredients too, and not for the better IMO. More cheap filler powders, less premium ingredients. The powder is no longer the deep rich green color it used to be, it's dryer, finer, and doesn't taste quite the same (or as good) as it used to. Ugh. This product just keeps getting worse. I can no longer recommend it and am adjusting my rating downward as a result.
