Not a phonics reader
This Fancy Nancy Phonics Reading series bought via Amazon is no more a phonics reader than any of the other Fancy Nancy books. A phonics reader starts by using only short, CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words, usually short /a/ words such as: cat, bat, had, and gradually adds the other vowels. The child is encouraged to sound out these words after having been taught letter sounds and especially the short sounds of the vowels. Long vowel words are added only after all the short vowels have been introduced. Only easy sight words are used, such as: the, are, is, and.
This series starts with words of all kinds such as: super-duper. One has to find the short vowel words embedded among sight words and long vowel words. The child has little chance to develop sounding-out skills because so few short vowel words are even present!
I was very disturbed by this set being passed off as having been developed by a so-called phonics expert. I consider myself to be a phonics expert after years of being instructed in how to teach phonics and many years of having taught phonics in schools. This Fancy Nancy Phonics Reader doesn't even come close to being a basic phonics set in my opinion.
