Unintelligent girl asks endless AND incompetent questions
There is nothing that annoys and infuriates me more than idiotic, stupid and defiant main characters that are like that for no reason other than their own stubbornness and ego. Few books have heroines that annoy me this much; I almost gave up reading a few times but I wanted to find out what the artifact was. The basic premise of this book is that Mia's younger brother, Justin goes missing in an archaeology dig. At first Mia tries on her own to find out what happened but when shady things happen she has no choice but to find someone else - King. A mysterious, potentially supernatural being who can find anyone, anywhere... There's a sharp thin difference between spirited defiant heroines and stupid, sullen and difficult ones. Mia Turner, unfortunately reads like she's more than a few brain cells too short for that light bulb. Must be all that alcohol binging - studies DO show that alcohol abuse from a young age does cause brain cell death. That would explain why Mia is completely insufferable. 1. MANY times, she has admitted that King isn't someone to be crossed. He can kill people with his mind (lol...), he KNOWS things that she's thinking, who she's dated - everything almost without her having to tell him and yet she tries to run away like an idiot. YES because taking a train is SO HARD for King to find when he can find people across countries. 2. A typical conversation Mia is capable of is like that annoying friend you go to to the movies with who keeps asking, "why are they getting on they plane? Why are the robots rebelling? Why is he the one?" WHEN watching the movie will answer all the questions. In addition, 99% of her questions are absolutely a waste of space and words. King: "You were about to tell your parents the truth." Mia: "how do you know?" UM...because in the previous 70% of the book up until now, he's know everything you were about to do AND shown up. I've concluded she's of below average intelligence than the common person. Anyway one else would have asked, "What would telling the truth have done that you stopped me?" It's obvious he has either super human or supernatural or non human abilities. Do you really have to ask EVERY TIME? EVERY TIME without fail? 3. Mia is incapable of making smart or logical choices. She knows some people are out to get her in Mexico - BEST IDEA ever to run away to her brother's apartment ALONE. Could there be thugs out to rape and torture her there? Maybe, but I'm Mia and I'm really dumb. She knows that Vaughn guy is dangerous in London, King killed his people...GREAT IDEA to run away AGAIN and risk being captured. 4. She's constantly angry at King for telling her what to do and disobeys him continually when she's shown absolutely NO capability to deal with anything on her own. In fact, he's been nothing but civil to her considering. If I were him and she constantly asked me completely daft CAPTAIN F-ING obvious questions I'd have choked her to death already. It's like someone asking you where you're going, even though they know and asking you over and over again if you're going there. She acts like a petulant, annoying, below average intelligence child throughout the novel. 5. Her stupidity not only puts herself at risk, but Mack and her brother when King has to waste time chasing her down and "keeping her safe." For me, she's selfish not only stupid. It's her ego that refuses to let her obey King who obviously knows what he's doing. There are no redeeming qualities to the main character who is the textbook definition of stupid. Stupid does not make a character good to relate to. Oh and the artifact? I wasn't sure if her brother had the artifact and left it for King, or if something else happened. I love how Mia's brother DECEIVES her, steals something valuable and plays fire with dangerous people and yet she thinks he's an angel and thinks King is the devil when King has shown himself to stay true to his word while her brother lies and steals. I won't be reading any more books - there's no hope, she's too stupid to stand.
