Slouching Towards Misery
Sweet Jesus Scrubbing A Frying Pan, these socks are awful. There were other reviews that I read, before I made the decision to purchase these socks, that described them as awful, but did I listen to those? No, no I did not. I didn't listen, because I very specifically - and fervently -- wanted socks that were "lightweight" and that "slouched" and that were convenient, neutral colors, and the description from our friends over at Style Gaga (Gaga? Really?) pointedly used those exact terms, which overrode the negative comments, pinged the axons and dendrites in my brain and sent the neurological signal to CLICK and PURCHASE and that is how you sell socks, people. Therein is their success. And that's where it ends. Because these socks have the weight, texture and density of a 2-ply facial tissue with one of the plys removed. They do not stay up. See, in the product photo, how they're evenly coating that mannequin ankle, and seem to intend to do that for the duration of the mannequin's sock-wearing hours? In real life, that does not happen. In real life, the Gaga sock immediately slithers down one's leg, into one's shoe, to bunch up under every area of negative space between the sole of one's foot and the inside of the shoe. 30 seconds after putting on these socks, they're no longer socks, they're under-arch WADS. And you would THINK that Gaga And Company had done some engineering to fight against this, because the socks have this tighter weave in a ring around the ankle, implying that the foot part of the sock always stays put, leaving the upper part to slouch attractively, but NO. No, mon frere, that is a clever lie. I know. You feel betrayed. You are not alone. I tried wearing a pair of these socks twice -- with two different pairs of shoes -- and both times, I ended up in actual PAIN, both from the way the under-arch WADS were chafing my feet, and from the tripping and falling that occurred when I repeatedly tried to yank the socks back UP as I walked (pro tip: in the future, separate yanking and walking into two discrete actions). Friends...wearing these socks made me ANGRY. I didn't know that I could be propelled into actual ANGER by a pair of socks, but I am not exaggerating. I'm normally a kind, gentle, sensitive soul, yet on the first day I wore these socks, I kicked two puppies, cheated on my taxes, pilfered a wheel of 3-year Emmentaler Swiss from Whole Foods, and told the Starbucks barista that the name to call out for my drink was "F*** YOU." You don't want to know what happened the second day of sock-wearing. Please just know how truly sorry I am. Also, the child is expected to make a full recovery. My point, here, is that I do not recommend the Socks of Gaga. No good will come from their wispy weave and their deeply codependent relationship with gravity; there's no room in that relationship for your comfort and foot health. Find another light slouch sock. There is no shortage.
