Glaring errors for a Harvard history professor
I am reading this one volume history of the United States and am puzzled by the author’s statement on page 154 that in the election of 1800 Adams and Jefferson were tied with an equal number of votes in the Electoral College”, with the tie to be broken by the House of Representatives. In fact Jefferson and his running mate Burr tied with 73 votes each and Adams ran third with 65. Lepore gets back on track later at page 164 with the correct result, but such a glaring error from a professor of history at Harvard is disappointing, and leaves one to wonder how many other errors were left uncorrected by the editors.Oops, despite my better instincts I read on only to learn at page 293 that “By May of 1861, the Confederacy comprised fifteen states . . .” There were only eleven Confederate states. I give up on this book. What glaring errors (see others mentioned by other reviewers) by a Harvard historian involving basic facts which most readers with a basic knowledge of American history know better than Lepore.
