Good looking crib, but had mattress fitting problems
This is a great looking crib and designed well to go through different phases of your child's early years. It's sturdy and relatively easy to put together. It took my husband and I about an hour to put together, but make sure to pay close attention to the placement of the holes on each side of the crib in the directions. The reason for the 2 star review? The crib calls for a standard crib mattress (roughly 27.5" W x 52"L), however the instructions included with the crib state "any mattress used in this crib must be at least 27 1/4 inches by 51 5/8 inches. Thinking the mattress would be the least of our worries, we went to a big box baby store and purchased a mattress listed as 52" L x 27.5" W x 6" H. When we got home, we placed the mattress in the crib, but lo and behold, there was about an inch and a half gap between the crib and the mattress, when the mattress was pushed to one side of the crib. I've read numerous reviews saying that the mattress should be a snug fit in the crib. Being a first time nervous mom, I was not okay with the gap and the idea of my soon to be born child getting her limbs stuck between the crib and the mattress. The mattress was nowhere near a snug fit (and crib bumpers are out of the question), so back to the store it went. We spoke to one of the sales people at the store and they mentioned that a lot of crib manufacturers who also manufacture mattresses, will make their cribs slightly larger (or smaller) than normal so you're forced to buy their mattress. I should've not ignored that little anecdote. I searched high and low for a new, wider mattress, but the best I could find was one that claimed to be 28" wide. It was listed as 28" wide every site it was listed on, so I was convinced it was 28" wide. When it arrived, I placed it in the crib, and it turned out to be 27 1/4" wide. It was even worse than the first mattress. Thank goodness for free returns on Amazon, because that's going back. The third and final mattress I tried, I bit the bullet and purchased the Babyletto Pure Core Air mattress. There weren't very many reviews on it online but I decided to try my luck one more time. When the mattress arrived, I unpacked it, and placed it in the crib, and guess what? It was a perfect fit. No gaps, no sliding around, no nothing. It seems that others who've reviewed the crib here have had varying luck on mattresses fitting, but I was one of the unfortunate ones who got a dud - in terms of size. Thankfully the Babyletto mattress was a perfect fit, but I found it annoying that all other "standard" sized mattresses slid around. UPDATE July 2018 We're still using this crib after three years, but now as a toddler bed. It continues to serve its intended purpose as a place for my child to sleep in. When my daughter was teething, she gnawed at the rails and did some damage to the paint. I contacted Babyletto directly for a touch up kit that is mentioned on their site was sent a standard white paint pen you can find on Amazon. I was expecting a better match in paint.
