Problem With Extended Edition Bluray of Fellowship of the Rings
I purchased the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition and after sepending nearly a hundred dollars I was very disappointed with the quality of the video transfer for Fellowship of the Rings. The whole disk is WAY TOO DARK!!!!!!!!!! There is a green/blue tint that covers the entire transfer INCLUDING THE MENU. The result is the entire transfer looks like it was filmed through SUN GLASSES. The scenes regarding the mines of Moriah and the battles that take place there are so dark it is impossible, even after trying to brighten the image to see what the heck is going on! The problem does not lie with my 1080p high definition SONY projector because it has been professionally calibrated. Try as I might I could not clear up the problem. The whole transfer is MUDDY and way TOO DARK. Lots of detail is missing as a result. I know WB stated that this tint was "exactly what the director, Peter Jackson wanted and approved" but I do not believethem. I have seen the Fellowship of the Ring extended edition both in the theater and at home and the image was NEVER as dark and muddy as it is in the Extended Edition Bluray release! I went on to look at the second film and the problem does not exist at all. The image, while tinted is clear, crisp and bright enough so that even the darkest night scenes are redily viewable. This is especially evident in the evening battle for Helms Deep. Even though the events take place in the dark, the image is bright enough for the audience to see exactly what is going on. The other two Extended Edition Bluray films are perfect and exhibit none of the visual flaws found in Fellowship of the Rings. You can do this test for yourself, watch the scenes in the mines of Moriah on the Fellowship of the Ring (they are nearly unwatchable) and then watch the battle for Helms Deep in the second film and you can not help but see for yourself that there is a SERIOUS PROBLEM with the video transfer on the Fellowship of the Ring. This fiasco is on the scale of the mess with the first release of GLADIATOR on Bluray. That studo also tried to lie about the problem and act as if it did not exist. However, eventually the studio owned up to the problem after losing so much good will on the part of their customer base. WB needs to own up to the mistake and FIX THE PROBLEM AND OFFER FREE REPLACEMENT Bluray disks OF THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING for all of the faithful fans who have spent so much money double dipping for the EE Bluray Trilogy set after previously purchasing the EE DVD Trilogy. At this point I can not and will not recommend the EE Bluray set to ANY of my family or friends, UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS FIXED because there is a serious problem with the video transfer of the first film: Fellowship of the Rings. I will also continue to let as many people know about this problem so that they will not be duped into purchasing the Bluray EE Lord of the Rings Trilogy until the problem is fixed.
