OMG...someone beat me with a club already!!!
First, a disclaimer. I only purchased this book because it was an Amazon suggestion. As I have exhausted all of my normal reading (more military spy novels and fictional crime) I figured to take a different avenue and try what "appeared" to be a mystery/drama/suspense/thriller.
Well, it may be all of that but, sweet Lord, when will this story end???
The premise (unlike the somewhat misleading Amazon preview) is that a mother is chained upstairs by her daughter over something in their past that has made the daughter so angry at her mom she feels the need to hold her captive on the 2nd story attic.
Without giving any more away (from what I've read so far - 43% of the book) this book goes from one character, to the next character, then back to the first character...only 24 years prior, and then the next character, and then the same character...only 24 years prior, and then back to the first character at present, etc....
Almost half way through this book and I'm still unsure what it is they're fighting over, other than a mom trying to keep her 14 year old, "off-the-rails", daughter in check but having a hard time being a current single mother.
Although the writing is OK, I find that the author is trying too hard to use too much writing "craft" and not enough "substance", meaning the details of the house/furniture/food/etc is well-explained but it just goes on and on and on...
That said, unless you're into Harlequin romance novels with a nastiness to them then I'd avoid wasting time on this one. I'm sure from other reviews this author has his fan base but anything outside of that, I just don't see him connecting with.
I just ordered another novel more in my tastes so I think, after 43% of reading this one, I'm just going to skip to the end and see if I can figure out what exactly this daughter is so pissed off about.
Final analysis...this book was a total waste.
