★★☆☆☆
I have never been so excited for or more disappointed in a book.
Half the book is missing. It feels like the author brought his habit of splitting a story into two books into this one. The word count and size of the book doesn't matter if you don't flesh out and finish the story. There was way too much time jumping. It was like "Game of Thrones" last season. If that last season only gave you 3 episodes of jumping all over the place then decided in the middle to hold the last 3 episodes for a year and expect you to pay more to watch them.
"Underlord" left us on a cliffhanger which was my main reason for wanting to read this book. There were only a few pages given to that story arc which was ridiculous. Why would you tease a story arc, get fans excited about it then only dedicate a few pages to it. Where the F is the rest of it? The direction the story went in the last 3rd of the book was trash. It may turn out great later but we wont know until the next one comes out because the story stops in the middle.
Despite the poor choices in story direction and the book being unfinished, in my opinion, what was there was well written. I gave the book 2 stars instead of 3 or 1 because 3 stars would not convey how disappointed I am and 1 would be unfair because what is there is enjoyable despite the things I listed above.
I read many books each month (around 20 so far in September) and up until this book the Cradle series was my favorite out of everything I have read, ever. I have recommended Will's books to anyone who I know that reads often. I have read every book Will has written. I have purchased and given his books to people as gifts. If the next Cradle book is like this one however I will not read anything else he writes after that. The next book needs to be twice the word count with fleshed out arcs and much less time jumping as well as more thought on story direction.
I wish there was a way to go back in time and pretend this book didn't happen. I think he needs a more diverse group of test readers.
