Don't waste your money. Wait for Dropcam to come out with a competing product.
So far the Ring video doorbell has been really disappointing. The video quality is terrible and looks like you're looking through a peephole. The video feed is glitchy (See attached screenshots) and the app is delayed, slow or crashes on answer. You can not pull up the video feed on demand, the unit itself is big and bulky, and sits out from the wall with nearly an inch of thickness. If you miss a call, I have seen the cloud storage can take up to 30 minutes to make the video available to view. Sometimes it doesn't even save the video. (See attached screenshot of missing call video) When it does save video, it's so delayed that at the start I usually only see my mailman's back, as he's already half way back up my driveway. I can't stress enough how terrible the Ring iPhone app is. Compared side-by-side with Dropcam's app experience, Ring is clearly outmatched. From a usability standpoint, it works, but just barely. As I mentioned before, crashing and general lag are commonplace. From a design standpoint, the interface is a mess of competing hierarchy, weird button elements that aren't actually buttons, and pointless logo placement. (See the motion zones screenshot) The app feels like each section was designed by a different person working off of completely different branding guidelines. Overall, the Ring app is completely devoid of any coherent creative direction. From a smart home interaction standpoint, there is no public developer API and the Ring is not currently compatible with Apple's HomeKit program, Nest's 'Works with Nest' program or Belkin's WeMo partnership program. I would not recommend that anyone purchase the Ring video doorbell, it's a waste of money. I ignored the bad reviews on their previous product (the DoorBot) hoping that they had learned from previous mistakes and that this second generation model would be different. It's not, in fact, it's probably worse.
