Dosen't work
I bought the larger version of this fire pouch and being that I was going to stash thousands of dollars worth of items in the bag as well as irreplaceable items such as computer hard drives family photos and documents, I thought it was a good idea to sacrifice one of the bags for a test. I knew it was a very good possibility that the pouch would not be usable after my test but I needed to be able to trust the product and felt that it was a small price to pay for the added security of knowing the product worked as advertised.
The test: I stuffed the pouch with a stack of paper cut to the size of US currency (about an inch thick) with dollar bills on the top and bottom. I also put in a couple of cd's, a few coins (silver, copper and modern coins) and an old hard drive out of a laptop computer.
I then started a fire made up of 2X4 fir studs in my wood stove and let it burn until I was getting a temperature reading in the range of 800-1100 degrees fahrenheit with my infrared meter. Then with the doors of the stove open I put the pouch on top and set a timer for 15 minutes. After approximately three minutes I could see the pouch was starting to fail so I took it out and let it cool outside. After it cooled I inspected the bag and it contents and this is what I found.
First, the inside of the pouch which is a type of plastic material had melted to itself and made it impossible to get inside the pouch without cutting it open. Also the Velcro closure was melted somewhat and the seal of the pouch was compromised. Inside, the stack of simulated money was badly charred, the cd cases where melted, the Cd's themselves were warped and blistered and the hard drive was melted and covered with the burned and melted plastic material that the inner bag is made of. The coins where also covered in the plastic mess but they did survive, although I expected they would since the melting point of silver is over 1700 F.
I realize this test was extreme but I wanted a worse case scenario type test and this product failed completely and quickly.
