It's Okay, But There Are Issues!
I upgraded from QuickBooks Mac 2012 to QB Mac 2014, (Skipped v 2013) and while there are some positive upgrades, there are some, "Features" that are problematic as far as I'm concerned. First the Pro's though: I like the refreshed options, Income Tracker, new reports, and sales tax adjusting, and honestly it seems to be a bit faster on my iMac than the 2012 version. Now onto the Cons: Intuit promotes that QB Mac 2014 now has a, "New Left Hand Toolbar" to supposedly let you, "Move around QuickBooks even faster than before." Can you say, "NOT"! It's a complete downgrade in my opinion. It has slowed us down for sure. I guess the software engineers at Intuit thought that removing all of the menu items and titles from the top of the screen, and then throwing them to the "Left" in icon form, would magically cause everyone to work faster. Good grief. Now you can no longer see descriptions under the icons of what they are. (Just icons unless you expand the menu) I'm constantly hunting in the new vertical "expanding" menus for things that used to be simple to find. Lest you think you could just go from the new default vertical menu back to the horizontal one, think again! That's not an option anymore. From reading forum threads, apparently this was a complaint in the beta version, and was requested by many to be an option - they must not have agreed. Now, the unintended consequence of this "menu migration", is that you no longer know what company you're in if you manage multiple companies. Unlike QB 2012 Mac that used to have "Your Company Name" at the top of the screen always displayed in the horizontal menu, now, there's nothing there at all. No company name at the top, not on the side, not on the bottom. Nowhere. I was told to keep the Home Page open; it has the company name there. Really, that's the answer? I don't operate from the "Home Page", unless it's for a quick view of sales or payables. I don't pay bills, write checks, create purchase orders, enter quotes, etc. from the home page. I do, however, always have my checking ledger open for example, since I'm always working there! Without the company name at the top, or somewhere on the screen, (When the home page isn't open) you have no idea what company is open, and we're absolutely going to make entry errors, no matter how careful we are - guaranteed. Intuit generally makes the software better with each revision, but they do have a unique knack for removing useful features and tools at the same time. I found a work around to keep my check ledgers from getting screwed up. Not the best, but it works. I went to the "Chart of Accounts", right clicked on the checking account and chose, "Edit Account". I then added a description in the company name. So for example, now my checking account name reads, "My Company Name - Bank Name". I shouldn't have to come up with this kind of workaround on software that's been around this long, but it should at least help keep us from data entry errors. Simply stated, the vertical menu is a nuisance. The lack of displaying the company name at the top is a fundamental flaw that is unacceptable, and WILL lead to mistakes for people who manage multiple company books. For these reasons, I can only give it two stars until these issues are addressed.
