Do NOT pass GO, do NOT collect £200, go directly to JAIL!
I was ecstatic that they came out with a commemorative edition celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who and couldn't wait to see the creativity behind translating the classic iconography of this endearing British science fiction series into the legacy of the popular board game. I am sorry to say that it's complete rubbish. As soon as we opened the plastic shrink wrapping and opened the box we discovered several problems. First, the board itself was warped from bad gluing and split at the folding creases as we unfolded it. Next, the CHEAP metal game pieces which are NOTHING like the real DIECAST metal game pieces of classic Monopoly, immediately broke. The choices are baffling. They are supposed to resemble Eleven's Bow-tie, Ten's Sonic Screwdriver, Seven's Umbrella, Five's Celery, Four's Scarf, Two's Recorder (took me awhile to identify that one since it looks more like a gun). There really wasn't much creative thought put into the design of the pieces at all. What about some classic characters like K-9, Daleks, or even the Tardis? Nope. The playing pieces are so tiny you can't really move them easily around the board. The Umbrella and the Sonic broke from their respective bases. The board itself, aside from immediately tearing at the folds when we opened it, reveals not much creative impetus behind the familiar Monopoly real estate. Instead of Boardwalk we have Rassilon from The End of Time and The Arc of Infinity. Shouldn't Boardwalk have been Gallifrey or the constellation of Kasterborous? Do we meet River Song in Jail? Is the objective of the game to build hotels around the galaxy and build an empire? Doesn't that kind of go against Gallifreyan harmonic principals? It's just the familar Monopoly game with a bunch of Doctor Who related images and names conspicuously placed around it. We promptly packed everything back up and returned it to Amazon. Doctor Who fans deserve better quality than this. This was just a poor attempt to cash in on the 50th anniversary and take advantage of fans willing to shell out their hard earned money to support a show they love. Shame on you, Hasbro.
