I thought this was perfect, but quality control is obviously not Mongoose's strong suit....
Something has to be REALLY good or REALLY BAD to get me to review it...this is the latter. I'd give it zero stars if I could.
I had been looking for a scooter for my son that could do more than the typical razor: a bit of off-road, a bit of chunky pavement and some long range comfort. This seemed ideal, with pneumatic tires and hand brakes over a long wheel base. Assembly was pretty simple and seemed straightforward - I've been a cyclist for years, so this simple brake setup was easy to adjust, and mounting the wheels was simple. Unfortunately, that's where the ease of use evaporated.
I took my son on an initial ride (him on the scooter, me jogging as is our routine) and the scooter seemed great for the first mile or so. Soon after that, however, the front hub locked completely and wouldn't rotate at all. We tried to solve the problem on the trail, but it wasn't going to happen. I ended up having to carry the scooter home.
I took the front hub apart at home when I had a minute, and the ball bearings were shredded - half of them fell out when I loosened the hub nuts. I'm used to repacking mountain bike hubs, but these were beyond repair. They had never been greased in the factory, and they seemd to be made out of something slightly more robust than tinfoil - in short, totally worthless. Since rotating wheels are a pretty big ticket item on a scooter, this is an epic fail as far as this one goes. I took the rear hub apart, and it was marginally better - the bearings were still in their housing, but no grease and stiff movement.
Suffice it to say, this scooter will be going back to Amazon. I don't expect carbon fiber and titanium for $80, but I expect a workable scooter that can get through more than one ride without major overhaul. I'll send this piece of crap back and get a razor with larger wheels - I guess pneumatic wheels and working hubs in one package is too much to ask.
