I bought this mat thinking it was a good natural alternative for my baby. I contacted the company to ask which plant the natural rubber was derived from since it's labeled "latex-free" and the natural rubber is from a plant called Guayule, which you can run a search on for more info if you're curious. The company representative had to ask the rubber supplier because they didn't have the product details on hand. I had read reviews complaining about the "rubber smell" prior to purchasing and when the mat arrived I instantly recognized the smell as that of synthetic rubber, not natural rubber--kind of like rubber tires. I contacted the company again and was indeed informed that the mat is 70% synthetic (petroleum-based) rubber and only 30% natural rubber. The mat works well, but I think that it has been unfairly advertised as "natural" when it is clearly mostly synthetic and consumers should be made aware of the green-washing.
