I'm happy the intended audience throughly enjoyed this novel. However, I am African American, born and raised in the South, and grand-daugther of the help. I suspected that this book was not written for me. One chapter in, I continued to read, hoping that I was wrong. I wasn't. I can think of few times when I have been more deeply offended by a work of fiction. Particularly galling to me was the inconsistent use of of dialect. I guess darkies of the time had to speak in that manner and amazingly, no white people had linguistic quirks. Very interesting indeed. I saved the book and I will be using it for kindling when I return to Alabama for Christmas.
