★★☆☆☆
love the sound but don't like operation and build quality of the player
I am writing this review because after reading the few reviews available it sounded like this would be a great Media Player. But after receiving the player (a Christmas gift from my wife) I have to wonder if most of the people who reviewed the unit have actually used or even seen one in person. So I reread the reviews and noticed a trend that they don't actually say anything about using the player (all except one). So here is a real user review. The good. (I use it for music playback only) The sound on the player is superb. I rip my cd's using the FLAC format and I have listed to playback using Wired (Grado's) and Bluetooth headphones. I have also listened to it on my home stereo using wired and a Bluetooth connection. There is a slight difference in the tonal quality but in a noisy environment my ears can't tell the difference. Sony digital processor does seem to color the music a little but it is on the warm side so it not objectionable. I must say I love the sound of this player. The media program (Media Go) that comes with it is very good for ripping music in any format that the player supports. Setting up playlist to send to the player is a breeze. The program does not have the options of JRiver Media Center but it is simpler to use. The Bad It is cheaply built - If feels like a toy. I do not believe it will stand up to daily use. Not a quality product that I have come to expect from Sony. For the price of this unit I expect it to at least have the build quality of my FiiO player or my cassette Walkman (which still works) Bluetooth- It's a joke. My main reason of wanting this player was Bluetooth connectivity. If you disconnect it from the headphones, stereo -car and home, It take at least three tries for it to reconnect the next time you want to use it and you have to navigate to the Bluetooth screen to do it. This creates a problem on its own. If you were listening to your playlist and stop at a particular track you now loose that place unless you navigate back to the home screen (more on that later) and bookmark your spot before you try and reconnect to your Bluetooth playback source. This is a major pain. Screen Navigation. The player has 4 main buttons. The toggle button which surrounds the play and pause button is use for navigation. The navigation is more cumbersome -not user friendly- than it needs to be. Try and navigate while you are working out or somewhere not so well lit and it is frustrating at best. At this price it should have a touch screen. My 29 dollar SanDisk player is easier to use that this setup. The next problem. You really can't power down the player. Once you power down the player if you accidently touch any button on the player it powers back up. I keep the player in a soft case clipped to my belt. I have bumped the player while in the case and have ended up with a dead battery the next time I wanted to use it. There are other problems but they are minor and I can live with those. If Sony wants to play in this market (no pun intended) these major flaws need to be fixed. Tried to post a review on Sony's web site and they would not let it post. So I don't trust any reviews on their web site at this point. This is why I am posting it here to at least let potential buyers be aware of what it is really like to use this player.
