Hit and miss. Flavor, quantity and value issues.
I was rather surprised at the small size of the box and that it didn't ship from an Amazon DC. I will adjust ratings as I eat thru the box. That might take another hour.
Packaging: Yes, it is small. See the attached photo. Wine bottle for size (did not have a banana). If the wine was included, this would get 6 stars. Also I would not be concerned if the box was FULL of product rather than excelsior (wood shavings with a fancy name). The small card has a bit of info. Very small type which could have been increased with a bit of layout and editing. Type size of maybe 4pts... the size you need to manually input into a word processor and it asks "really?" Maybe they do that to make the product look big? But good things come in small packages.
Tika Patagonia Chips. This 35g 1.2oz package was very tasty. A step up from a similar Terra chips blend. Less oil, proper amount of salt and crisp. I don't have any lunchbox chips bags for comparison, but surely this is far smaller. 7g fat, 15g carbs. The whole bag is 35g, you do the math. So maybe it is a "health sized" portion rather than "Healthy Size"? I ate the chips one at a time and they were tasty. From Chile. You can get prices online, but you won't see this elsewhere on amazon yet. I would eat them anytime instead of Terra chips, but I wouldn't pay $4 for them.
Rasperry coconut pecks from UK. 25g. Tasty coconut chips with a healthy raspberry flavor. Great ingredient label which includes %s of many ingredient - cocunut 44% raspberry 40%.... baobob, vanilla. 100% organic. I have to say that this is the best use of baobob in a snack mix that I've had this year. OK, that's too snarky. This was very tasty and took a while to go thru the bag. I would happyily eat again if it was about $3. Nuitrition... 10.4g of Saturated Fat or 54% RDA - wow, now I am glad it is a small bag. I hope that baobob is not high in saturated fat! Label says that it is a superfood and they use "a sprinkle for extra zing!". I like saying the word, the tree is fascinating in other respects. I hope that getting it doesn't involve killing the tree.
Possibility remains that this review will increase to a 4 star.
Break for a healthy dinner (watermelon feta salad, raw local radishes w/ fleur de sel & a nice glass of iced chai). That gets 5 star.
Because writing this has been fun, I venture on. So far two very tasty products but they were very small portions.
Next up is the entry from France (or so it says on the card). Apple-Raspberry Fruit Sticks 30g (1 oz). Sounds tasty. I love fruit leathers and am sad that nearly everyone available in 2017 is sticky sweet, often has artifical ingredients. A quick look to the nutrition label shows 100 calories. Nice. 24g of carb - wow, good thing I don't count my carbs! So the entry from France says "Made in Belgium" - humor points but no deduction of stars. The bag is resealable. That seems odd given the size of the bag. And there is a possibly ominous warning on it "consume soon after opening". Ingredients all check out, natural and all, date code shows best before countdown has 4 months until they are not best. So I open it and out come some moist (but not in an unpleasant way) sticks which are the size and shape of dentene gum sticks. I count and there are 17 of them. But something is very odd about the product... the color. See the photo. These are rather dark blue, nearly black. I have traveled a lot around France and even the "Belgium part" of France - I frequent the village markets and supermache. Never have I seen black (or dark blue) apples or raspberries. I smell to ensure it is OK to proceed. There is plenty of fruit like flavor, but I can't describe it as apple or raspberry. So I try another, this time with my eyes closed and eat it slowly. The taste is not unpleasant. But I won't & can't finish this now. I will use the zip lock feature. Despite the small size, in this case the portion is too big. But not for good reasons.
Next up, an entry from Greece. Breadsticks with Kalamata olive paste & oat grains. I am interested and hopeful!! 120g (4oz). Nutrition facts are all single digits, no alarm there for a change. Serving size = 1 stick and there are six in the box. Huh? Opening up and out comes 6 small logs (I have not seen a breadstick this shape) -- every one of them broken in at least one place... some as many as three. Interesting, but if they are tasty, shape is no matter. The visual issue is with the color combined with the shape. Calling the color "dry cat food brown" seems about right. If I had 6 people to feed this too, I would suggest that you turn the lights off. NOT recomended for a cocktail party situation or passing around a dinner table. But these are quibbles compared to what comes next. The taste. Aparently Greece has suffered decades of drought and rolled sawdust and sand together then put some oats on it. The favor profile can be summed up in one word: dessicant. The little bags which keep electronics dry in shipments... the ones labeled "do not eat". That label should be used with these so called 'breadsticks". I have a difficult time consuming one stick. So, I guess I have no issue with the size.
The review is now at two stars. I am reluctant to try the final two.
Coco Jazz cruncy coconut chips from Thailand. 40g - 2 servings. 9g of saturated fat (45% RDA), I will be careful to only have a small sample because my cardiologist is on vacation. Taste: excellent - very clean. Just coconut. I wish the package was resealable. Khap khun kah! (Thanks in Thai). A good pick. But it is coconut chips and there are plenty of good options. If you bought $4 of coconut chips, the bag would be many times larger that this 40g.
Oh Canada. The last entry. Edgy Veggie - Roasted Butternut Squash crackers. 4.2 Oz 120G. No nutrional issues. Four separate bags. I would be very excited if not for the greek tragedy I put in my mouth a few minutes prior. I refilled my glass of water. The bag I open has four strips in it. They look like dried plaintain strips (width, thickness, color). Taste is quite good or the roasted butternut squash with enough flour the you can't forget it is a cracker. This would go well with a bit of boursin or similar soft cheese. This box is easily worth the $4 - if each item was of equal cost. I finish the small bag. Ending on a positive note.
But not positive enough to overcome some of the big misses in taste, portion size and value.
I think I will try one more month - but only because I enjoyed writing this review & I am adventurous in my culinary journeys.
