A bit of background: My 6-year-old daughter received a smaller magic set by Fantasma this Christmas and she really enjoyed it. I picked this Super Deluxe set up after Christmas at a good discount because of how much she was enjoying the smaller set, but waited till later to give it to her so she could get maximum enjoyment from the first set. Almost three months later and it's still the toy she's playing with the most, and it's not close. She decided to try out for the school talent show doing a few of the tricks from the smaller set. Keep in mind, this is a kid who once cried at a choir concert because she doesn't like being in front of people, but she WANTS to perform magic, so I'm like cool beans kiddo, you go nuts. And of course she didn't make it, because she's 6, and the metal ring trick takes some coordination, but she LOVES practicing and really enjoys showing off the tricks she can do. Her failure is not the fault of the set. After she found out she didn't make the talent show I gave her this Super Deluxe set, because I didn't want her to be discouraged. I reminded her it's important to keep practicing if she wants to improve, etc. She was super excited, and went off to watch the DVD while I got her sister ready for bed. I walk back in at the point where the magician is demonstrating the French drop sleight of hand for a boy and a girl. I tell her, "This trick is very difficult and will take a lot of practice. I tried it a bunch of times and still can't do it very well." The girl on the DVD, almost immediately after I finish speaking says something like, "That looks like a very technical trick." To which the magician responds with a tone that made me want to punch him in his smug face, "Maybe for a girl. He will have it down pretty quickly (looking/gesturing at the boy)." So much for being encouraging. I said, "That's not true. It's hard for boys too." I asked her later, "You know a boy and a girl can both be good at magic, right?" "Yes, Dad." she said. Thank goodness. I hope an instructional DVD never again has the chance to shake her confidence because she's a girl. I will never buy from this company, ever again.
