By the time you read this, it may be too late
I am writing the review I wish I would have read before purchasing. I strongly suggest that you buy a printer that tells you right in the product description how many prints you get per ink cartridge (which this one does not). I expect an inexpensive printer like this one to use expensive ink and to use it quickly but this model takes it to an unreasonable level, making it unusably expensive even for occasional printing. My last printer was also inexpensive and didn't use ink nearly as fast as this one did. It was only due to luck that I figured this out while I could still return this printer, and I'm only writing this review because I'm concerned other people might not be so lucky and will lose their money - and the printer will end up in landfill. In case you want to hear all the details... When my first ink cartridges ran out almost immediately (~10 full page color prints) I gave the printer the benefit of the doubt and assumed that the starter ink cartridges were not full capacity. That would have been a little tricky but still within bounds. I then spend $55 on a whole new set and was surprised when they ran out just as quickly. Again giving the benefit of the doubt, I assumed that I probably had a defective printer. I emailed tech support asking if this was normal and they directed me to call phone support - without answering my question about whether or not this rate of ink use was normal. Phone support asked me some questions and walked me through some steps and then said the next troubleshooting step was to send me a free magenta cartridge because my magenta was out. This would take up to a week. I pointed out that the cyan was also almost out and that I didn't want to have to wait a second week just for another troubleshooting step that we already knew we were going to have to take. I was told (nicely), this is the procedure. At no point did anyone directly answer my question and tell me that I should be getting more prints per cartridge than I was, so I can only assume that this is just how the printer is. When I went back to the product description and compared it with others, I noticed that some document the number of prints you get per amount of ink used, and some don't. Luckily I was still within the Amazon return window so I closed my tech support case and returned the printer. But I could just have easily not been so lucky. That is why I am writing this review, although reluctantly because I think Epson is a great company and I've been very happy with their products in the past. Perhaps this is just where entry-level inkjets are at these days. Bottom line: Buy a printer that tells you the cost of consumables, even if it's a little more expensive. Don't assume that a new inkjet will be about like your last one.
