Had the potential to be a good book…
I read this over the weekend when it was leaked on Twitter. I’ll start out on the positive points. For one, most of the parts that are actually about Jamie Lynn are interesting and did provide insight into her as a person. Talking about her teen pregnancy, emancipation plans and the atv accident with her daughter seemed very genuine. I would have liked to read more life experiences revolving around her. Where I think this book take a wrong turn is how much it revolves around her sister. It seemed like she was inserting herself into personal situations involving her sister and talking about how much it effected her, while completely disregarding any kind of understanding or empathy. It’s odd because there are glaring parallels between Britney’s situation she just got out of and Jamie Lynn’s few week stay in a cabin while she was pregnant. One would think after she described her own feelings of confusion, isolation, fear and wanting to take control back (to the point of legal emancipation) would have provided her with a better understanding of what her own sister went through on a much deeper level. But no, it did not seem to provide her with anything resembling empathy. The lack of empathy is astonishing. Another thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the obvious resentment Jamie Lynn has in regards to Britney. It’s clear with every anecdote involving her sister. And this isn’t a part of the book, but Jamie Lynn’s husband confirms this resentment in instagram DM’s with random people. Apparently he responds to a lot of peoples messages. He’s said that One of Jamie Lynn’s issues with Britney is that she embarrassed her when she was a kid/teen. Well, I believe him because it’s obvious throughout the book. Finally, I think that this book needed a lot more context. It leaves a lot to the imagination and I believe that was intentional. This knife story (which Britney says is not true), it lacks context and is very vague. For that reason, it felt odd to include in a book. There is a bit of irony, though, because Jamie Lynne has her own knife incident in a restaurant. The video is actually scary. Anyway, the story about the argument where Jamie Lynn is holding her daughter, it goes on and on about how Britney was yelling at her and Jamie Lynn was just trying to walk away, but no mention of what the argument was even about. Like I’ve said, lack of context. Oh and one more thing, the adjectives used to described Britney were disgusting. Definitely confirms what her husband has said. To sum it up, this book had a lot of potential, but was a let down. It really could have been something that changed public opinion about Jamie Lynn, which has not been great even before Britney spoke out to the courts last year. Instead, it just appeared to be a way for Jamie Lynn to embarrass Britney, but with a few stories about herself added in. For a book that is supposed to be about Jamie Lynn, it’s mostly about Britney. Save yourself the money and find it online for free.
