I purchased this unit so that I could grow herbs in my kitchen and have immediate access to fresh herbs anytime. The kit was pretty easy to setup. It came with a bottle of plant food and 6 herb pods. Of the 6 pods, only one of the pods (the regular basil pod) did not grow. It was amazing as to how quickly the plants sprouted and began to grow. The LCD display on the unit would tell you when to add water and when to add food. It also would tell you how many days the pods were planted and the current time. The plants were beautiful. I was excited to start using the fresh herbs. Now the reason for the 1-star: My wife and I both work full time and when not at work busy with our 2 children so we relied heavily on the the unit telling us when to add food and water. I woke up the other day and noticed that the plants had all died...the leaves turned brown and started to droop. The LCD was only flashing the current time (which was correct) and the number of days planted. I opened the small plastic door on the top of the unit and found that it was completely out of water. The unit failed to tell me that it needed water and all of the herbs died. I took a picture of the dead plants. Other Cons: It uses the time of day to determine when to turn the LED lights on and off. It does not have a battery backup so if the electricity goes out, it resets the clock to 12:00 and flashes. The LED lights no longer work until you set the clock correctly. It also reset the number of days planted back to 1.
