Heavy Lifting, Literally and Figuratively
Reading Ken Follett has always been a treat for me. The last trilogy maybe wasn't as great as it could have been, but still I was looking forward to Column of Fire and returning to Kingsbridge. Alas, things were clearly awry thirty pages in. It's the 1500s, and a young man has just been referred to as a "dreamboat", only the beginnings of lazy anachronisms. I was willing to overlook this, but what I couldn't overlook continuing on was the writing style, C+ romance novel characters and a vocabulary reading level of 5th grade. Oh yeah, and the pain in my wrists from balancing this thing which I would have forgiven except for the cardinal sin: Column of Fire was just plain boring.
