Christian/Faith based, gender stereotypes, forcing affection
Right off the bat, I noticed a few biblical references, which took me by surprise since there was no indicator that this would be a faith based book, but it actually is. Many mentions of God, importance of church, biblical stories, etc. I'm not Christian so this bothers me some. Normally, I don't mind a couple, but when it has nothing to do with the reason I bought it, there was no hint that it was religious, and it can be said without it, and it gets to be a lot more than just a couple examples, it does start to bother me. I didn't buy this for religious reasons. Just a heads up for any non-faith buyers out there. The other thing I noticed were the insane old fashioned gender stereotypes. Boys like roughhousing to show love, girls like sitting quietly together for tea parties, etc. Just no. I'm returning this book because after a specific quote, I was so horrified I will not continue reading it. It said to give loving touches even if they act as if they don't want them, because they actually do want them and need them, and encourages you to have other family and caregivers do the same. Um. WHAT?! Hello, rape culture! No way will I ever force affection on my children if they clearly do not want it. It doesn't matter what kind of affection I think they need and I have no right to make them accept physical affection. I'm teaching my kids the importance of consent and bodily autonomy. The love languages themselves are good, though seemed a little more like common sense to me, so that was disappointing as well. I did like the emphasis of remembering that not all people/kids have the same love language and we need to find out what their's is in order to help them feel our love vs just knowing we love them.
