★★☆☆☆
Stunning, just not in a good way
There is so much wrong with this book. The characters are shallow. The entire story is either shallow action or senseless exposition. Characters hae zero depth, and suddenly change motivations, voices, and even identities, for no other reason than the author's mood that day. The bad guys explain all their plots with a thoroughness that would be too ludicrous for an Austin Powers movie. The good guys come up with logically inconsistent theories about what's going on that happen to be entirely correct, even though the characters know nothing about the topics at hand and jump from one idea to the next as if we are supposed to accept these leaps of logic as somehow being rational. The core idea behind this book seems to be 80% generic Tom Cruise movie, 5% Stargate, and the rest a formless mishmash gleaned from reading a single Internet article on each of the topics: epigenetics, human origins, and the Spanish plague. All of this is vomited onto the pages in a nonsensical, vile squirming mass that will insult your intelligence. I laughed out loud A LOT while reading this book, and probably not where the author intended. It's the Gigli of speculative fiction books. You will feel stupider with every page. It's unspeakably bad, to be ridiculed and forgotten. It gets an extra star for having been edited well for grammar and spelling. Novels of this low quality are usually riddled with basic grammar errors, and this novel, with its short sentences, and limited vocabulary, admittedly lacks those particular distractions. I am ashamed that I slogged through to the end of this fiasco. I will now try to rescue my own happiness in the only way I can think of: by forgetting that this novel ever existed.
