The soda stream makes great drinks but the instructions are severely lacking. The people who claim it makes a mess are not using it properly. You press the button for 2 seconds release and wait for the pressure to stabilize before pressing again. You can hear the pressure escaping, and an audible click when the check valve closes, then press again. Do not remove the bottle until the pressure is equalized and tilt the bottle back very slowly when you do go to remove it. I loved it for the time it worked. After 3 months of daily 4 or 5 times per day use it is now broken. It seems there is a safety pressure release mechanism that has tripped inside the unit that I have as now instead of allowing the pressure to bleed off slowly when you press the button, the bottle is exposed to open air the whole time. Very disappointing. I knew it wasn't going to last forever being mostly plastic, but I sure thought I would get more than 3 months.
