Long, but important review - Updated
I purchased this off brand tablet for work away from home, knowing hotel available TV programming is not the greatest for my tastes. I picked up the tab from an Amazon locker on May 21st and set the tab up with a sim on T-Mobile and, other than an issue inserting the card and the memory card due to rough plastic in the case casting, had no troubles with the setup, operation or overall quality for the initial cost. The tablet went in a folding protective case from day one.
The tab traveled twice with me in a hard shell waterproof electronics carrier and was used daily for several weeks, charged regularly and treated like every other piece of electronic communications equipment I own (my average life of a tablet or cell phone is about four years and many are still fully active when retired).
About July 8th, I noticed the device began not to take a charge, trying it with several different chargers/cable combinations and confirming each was working by plugging the charger setup into another device. As expected, after a couple days in standby, the tablet died and failed to restart. I confirmed another charger pair was working with another device and plugged in the tablet for 24 hours before trying to boot the tab again, with no effect. I accessed Amazon Help on July 11th and tried at least three soft restarts (ineffective), at least three hard restarts (factory resets - ineffective) and contacted Amazon for replacement options. They advised the device was outside the 90 day window and I would have to contact the seller. I did the same day and began an email chain which was a combination of funny, disconcerting and frustrating.
The SZHaishang's (the manufacturer?) "after sales staff" representative responded initially by having me go through the reset process again (normal for the situation) and on July 19th, responded with two solutions: contact Amazon for a free replacement or purchase a better tablet for $159.99 US with an 80% discount, however they were requesting a "honest and positive review". I asked for and received the Amazon link and looked over the device, responding on August 3rd (the delay was mine, not theirs and due to work) that I would like to take the offer for the upgraded tablet at 80% discount, asking for details of the offer and telling the rep that I would use the device for about a week and write an honest review. I received a message, showing the Amazon link where I could buy the tablet at full price and explaining that I could use the device for about a week and write the review, after which I would receive the 80% discount. I responded that this was unacceptable, that I would not accept any after the fact discounts and that they could sell me the tablet at the discounted price and I would write the review as promised or no deal.
On August 4th, I received a message that, in return for a five star review of the individual's service, they would replace the original tablet from their factory (no estimate on time to receive). We had a few messages back and forth to clarify the conditions and in the end, I explained that I believed they were attempting to extort a good review from me. In the end, I offered to pay the 20% on the upgraded and promised to review the tablet after about four weeks or to receive a no cost replacement of the original tablet with a deadline of 10 PM on August 7th (local time) to receive a response.
That deadline has now passed and, true to my word, this is my review.
The initial device quality was decent for the price, however the screen scratches easily with regular use, the battery life was good, but not outstanding, the customer service was poor at best and I would not recommend this seller to anyone.
Update: I received a set of messages from a new contact representing the seller, initially offering an 80% refund if I would remove this review, which was later increased to 100%. I explained that the lost money meant less to me than the principal of their attempts to buy my voice, that I had already destroyed this tablet and replaced it with a Samsung and that I would update this review if they decided to do the right thing and take care of their customer, however they have not made any further move to do so. I realize Asian cultures are sensitive to "saving face", and would have worked with them if they had shown willingness, however I will not be blackmailed.
