Unlikeable Lead Male
I absolutely wanted to love this book. As an Anime-watching, Comic-Con enthusiast, gaming Mechanical Engineer, I honestly started this book thinking it was made for me. Understandably, the main female and I didn't have the same job, but I felt like her soul and mine were linked. 2 sisters in a pod. I felt for her when she didn't have time for anything more than a one-night stand. I felt even worse when she finally made her way to L.A. and found out the super sweet guy she had said one-night stand with was already taken. I thought it would be fine.... But then we met him. The real him. We read about who he was and how shallow and ridiculously scummy he was. I told myself not to worry, of course. There was a perfectly good explanation. Or, in fact, maybe he was just a douche. She would get over him and move on. This was a book about strong, intelligent women, after all! Neither of these things happened. I honestly almost gave up when I saw that the author was actually, in good conscience, going to allow this charade to be seen through to the end. I lost my respect for the female lead, as she obviously didn't have that much respect in herself, anyway. Yes, love, he's rich and handsome and under his perfectly polished exterior, there's something a tad more vulnerable... But look at the history. Look at the facts. I understand that she's a nerd and probably doesn't have the best self-esteem, but this was ridiculous. I started with Book 1 so I could make my way up to the Chemical Engineer in Book 3. Instead, I found out at the end of this book (that I will NOT be adding to my list of yearly reads, as it doesn't deserve to be there) that Book 2 is going to revolve around one of the guys we met and groaned at because he was a self-absorbed douche. I was okay with him not being intelligent. I was okay with the absurdly slow progression of the book and their relationship. I'm NOT okay with the author making a mockery out of strong women who fit themselves into niches of society's most male-dominated fields. We DO NOT settle for idiots just because it's difficult to find someone who is at our level. I don't recommend this book AT ALL. Shame that a femal wrote this. Damn shame. I would give it zero stars, but that's not an option.
