DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER!! You have been warned...
This printer with the Instant Ink sounds like a good deal, but let me explain how HP has totally messed this thing up. The print cartridges are stamped with the serial number of your particular print head after a certain amount of pages have been printed, to make sure that the cartridges are only used with your printer; making sure you don't loan them to friends and circumvent the system. This I can live with, since it's only fair and protects them.
But, if ANYTHING ever goes wrong and the print head stops recognizing the cartridges, this is when things go south quickly. First, HP tech support on the Ink side has no idea what HP support on the printer side has done, so they are both working against each other. I got caught in an endless loop on my printer screen because the printer would not advance past the print alignment page because it said that the cartridges, which I had just printed with the day before, were no longer 'enrolled in the Instant Ink program'. Nothing changed, no power outages or anything on my side; the printer just stopped recognizing the cartridges.
So, unable to print, my printer just sat on the printing alignment page while the printer was unable to actually print because the cartridges would not allow it....no amount of resetting or troubleshooting would fix it.
So I have to get HP tech support involved. After a couple of hours being swapped back and forth between Ink and Printer support, two separate factions, someone figured out the stamping of the cartridges and said that a whole new set of 4 cartridges would be required to get the printer up and running.
Cool, we can move forward...but alas, the first shipment got lost in HP shipping...so after a week of waiting and seeing my tracking not update past 'received shipping instructions', I called support again.
They found the 'glitch', and re-shipped, telling me they got permission to expedite, and it would be 2-3 days.
A week later, I get 3 of the 4 cartridges. So my printer shows one cartridge still in error, still stuck on the print alignment page. I call support again. I ask them to overnight a cartridge. They get manager support, and they tell me one is overnighted...two days later, no cartridge. I call support again, and they tell me it's on the way, whereas my tracking information from FedEx still shows as received paperwork, waiting for package...
Anyway, summary...the printer is ok, for the price. The Instant Ink sounds great in theory, but a big waste of time and full of glitches. But most of all, HP support is beyond ridiculous, and not even capable of shipping a package.
So, buyer beware.
