Please read...warning to my fellow ED souls...
I really thought awhile on this, before writing this review, but there is a warning tugging at my heart...Listen, I really like Dr. Susan, and watch her weekly vlogs. She is so smart and I love how she has turned her life around and helped so many people. The science is there, I agree with her totally that refined foods can be addicting. AND, I know this program can and will work for a lot of people, everyone is different though. I feel this warning should go out to two different groups of people (some may fall into both groups, like me) :-) Those with a true eating disorder, and those who are sensitive and/or very private...first, the sensitive/private issue. Taking the food scale in public, and making a production at restaurants and gatherings. I just can't do that...raises my anxiety unbearably, which in turn can aggravate my eating disorder. I just ask for no sauces, exchange things for salads or veggies, etc., and eat a small sensible portion. Sometimes, I even carry my own dressing or oil in my purse, way more discreet. That can work, I promise! Lastly, there is the issue of making the refined items completely "forbidden." I will repeat what I stated above: that CAN work for many people. Those with a true ED, however, need to make peace with food, not see it as something so powerful over them. In other words, speaking only for myself of course, the times I have ruled certain things out 100% for any length of time, I get very very anxious when around it. Then, after awhile (usually a great many months, so please don't ask me if I gave it a fair chance), if I don't allow myself a small amount of the food, its all I think about until I eat too much of it. Of course, this works way better if it's high quality and satisfying, such as chocolates I get from the health food store made with coconut oil and organic ingredients, or treats I bake with my daughter using wholesome ingredients. **sidenote: not gonna give my kids the impression any food is forbidden, that contributes to the ED mentality, unfortunately. Life is so beautiful when it's all about balance, in all areas...:-) We are all on our own unique food journeys, aren't we? And I wish everyone the best! I will always need to take it one day at a time. It is SO empowering reminding myself daily that food has NO power over me, instead of Dr. Susan's mentality of being powerLESS over food. If that works for you, great! In my own mind though, that sounds very negative and dis-empowering. I need to focus on positivity in my life and food journey! Knowledge is also power, however, so I did like reading this book, along with other health and wellness books I have read over the past few years. I love learning about new scientific, yet naturopathic, food and health issues, and have a goal to one day be of service to others' journeys too! Cheers!
